Through clever use of video, sound effects, a white board and excellent comedic timing we are taken through Liam Withnail’s ten day hospital trip as he is diagnosed with a chronic illness that changes his life.
This stand up show is something a bit different, combining something that Liam still deals with daily and the present day to create a story that seems so far away from him, as you would never know he was suffering with a chronic illness if not told.
Withnail’s audience work is outstanding, the immediate clapbacks and call backs to the audience throughout are clever and show why he is a staple of the Scottish comedy circuit.
His storytelling and how he portrays different scenarios is so compelling and I felt drawn into every work he was saying. He creates a wonderful balance between serious and funny which really separates his show from others.
The show although hilarious has many moments where Liam sympathises with his fellow sufferers of invisible illness. He takes time to raise awareness, encourage people without illness to not take this for granted and to thank members of the audience who may struggle with invisible illness themselves.
Liam is just an all round good guy, from anecdotes from past Fringes to characters in the hospital you get the feeling that he’s one of those people who can chat to anyone and get some interesting stories whilst doing it.
Withnail’s hospital moments has the audience in fits of laughter and encourages everyone to find the funny in the seemingly most difficult times.
