Egg also known as Anna Leong Brophy and Emily Lloyd-Saini take the audience through an hour of sketches and comedy, we soon learn that these sketches are a coverup for their struggling friendship.
Through a combination of storytelling and comedy the two create some funny moments amongst some slightly dull and sigh worthy jokes. Particularly good moments include a sketch about ‘Auntie Pam’ everyone has one, the family member who is unable to change with the world and seems to be utterly offended by anything she considers ‘woke’ and a sketch about sexy Halloween costumes, which poses the question why the woman’s version of a man’s costume always has to be sexy?
This show seems to be trying to create a feminist and anti-patriarchy edge, with much of the show being based on the difficulties of growing up as a woman and the pressure women face in relationships both romantic and platonic. However it just doesn’t coming across the way it was envisioned. There is no real depth to what they are saying and although they mention patriarchy and feminist issues throughout there isn’t much to go on alongside it and it needed to be delved into further if they really want to make an impact. Some of the longer jokes are quite difficult to pay attention to and lost some of the audience attention.
However there are some real standout one liners in there and really great comedic moments. It just might have been nice to have these moments be more consistent throughout. The show rounds out in the end very well and draws everything together, using moments from sketches throughout to line everything together and show the underlying meaning.
