Bristol Old Vic has unveiled the full ensemble for their upcoming world premiere production, “A Child of Science,” shedding light on the groundbreaking narrative of IVF pioneers Robert Edwards, Patrick Steptoe, and Jean Purdy. The play, authored by Gareth Farr and helmed by director Matthew Dunster, will grace the Bristol Old Vic stage from June 5th to July 6th, 2024.
Amidst a backdrop of societal skepticism and media scrutiny, the play delves into the untold struggles faced by Edwards, Steptoe, and Purdy in their quest to realize the revolutionary technique of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Their tireless dedication, buoyed by the courageous women who participated in their trials, ultimately led to the birth of the first IVF baby and transformed the landscape of reproductive medicine.
The cast comprises a stellar lineup, with Jamie Glover embodying the role of obstetrician Patrick Steptoe, bringing his extensive experience from both stage and screen. Meg Bellamy makes her professional theatre debut as embryologist Jean Purdy, following her acclaimed portrayal of Kate Middleton in “The Crown.” Adelle Leonce takes on the role of Margaret, symbolising the countless anonymous women who contributed to the trials, showcasing her seasoned talents honed on stage and screen.
Sonoya Mizuno, known for her diverse repertoire spanning film and television, portrays philanthropist Lillian Lincoln Howell and Sheena Steptoe. Mizuno’s stage credits include a notable performance in the off-Broadway production of “A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” They join previously announced Tom Felton as the medical maverick Robert Edwards. Actor, producer and best-selling author, Tom has garnered critical acclaim for his extensive work on stage and screen, and has established himself as one of the UK’s most beloved actors
The ensemble is rounded out by a talented supporting cast, carefully selected by Farr, Dunster, and their collaborators to authentically convey the personal stakes involved in the narrative. With many members of the creative team having personal connections to IVF, including their own fertility journeys, “A Child of Science” promises to be a poignant and deeply resonant theatrical experience, illuminating the human stories behind a monumental scientific achievement.
