CULT Comedy Doc about the Iceman Moves Closer

The Iceman

A film about a comic whose act involved melting a large block of ice on stage comes closer to fruition, with a work in progress showing at a cinema Birmingham.

The iceman, now known as Anthony Irvine, was an enigma in the early world of comedy clubs.

Stewart Lee, Phil Jupitus, Richard Herring, Jo Brand and Robin Ince have all participated in a documentary about him, which is being directed by Mark Cartwright and produced by Michael Cumming, director of Brass Eye and Toast of London.

MELT IT! The story of the Iceman can be seen at the Mockingbird Cinema on August 24. There will be a 45 minute screening followed by a Q and A with Cartwright, Cumming and Robert Wringham, author of Melt It! – a book about the Iceman, which features 56 numbered polaroids of each block melted on stage during the heyday of the Iceman.

Mark Cartwright says: “In 2010, when Robert Wringham wrote his book about this era of comedy, the Iceman could not be found. But a couple of years later, Anthony Irvine popped up again. This time as a visual artist called aim. What was going on?

“How much permanence and success can we assure for this man whose entire act was about impermanence and failure? Come along to the beautiful Mockingbird Cinema in Digbeth to see our WIP (Work In Progr’ICE) to find out.

“We’ll be presenting some of our never-before-seen footage (featuring the Iceman, Stewart Lee, Ronni Ancona, Jo Brand and the rest of our all-star cast) followed by a live talk and Q&A with director MARK CARTWRIGHT and writer ROBERT WRINGHAM to tell you about our strange journey so far.”
