Bed: The Musical is a commentary on life, marriage and falling in and out of love. Telling the story of two newly weds as they navigate life together. Facing challenges many, if not all couples deal with.

The story begins as the newly weds decide to buy a bed instead of go on a honeymoon, a not so exciting but practical decision as a young couple. It’s on this bed that the whole story takes place. On the surface the story seems like a typical, and not so exciting marriage story. But as we delve deeper into the characters we are introduced to much more difficult storylines.

A prominent theme was how different it is to be a mother compared to a father. For dads it takes minimal effort to be a great dad but when it comes to mums it takes a tiny thing to be a bad mum. Society and social norms play a huge role in the pressure placed on women when they become mothers. Amongst other plotlines this show did a great job in showing the realities of parenthood which are typically not discussed or talked about.

The actors told the story beautifully, an incredible scene near the end really touched me emotionally and brought some of the other audience members to tears. The acting felt so raw and real.

I found that none of the songs in the beginning particularly stuck with me and it took till about half way through the show to get to some of the more promising and engaging songs. However the reprise of ‘Watching Alice Sleep’ was a sad yet beautiful way to conclude the show.
