Your senses are arrested by the smoke as the bar beckons, the beat grows louder as you subside into the white, milky mist. One could mistake Lash’s venue for a club. But instead upon entrance, you’re ushered to your seat with a bit of a small chat from Sonny. The man of the hour himself, who is about to embark on a life-changing night out.
But Sonny doesn’t set out to change his life, just make the weekly pilgrimage to the sacred spaces where booze flows and groove takes over. Only hoping to find sanctity in escaping the 9-5 zombies. Their presence in his life serves as a chilling warning of what his life could be, and that is the last thought you want to have when you’re getting “off your nut”. Unfortunately for Sonny (but wildly entertaining for us), they sniff him out and latch on like there’s no tomorrow.
Jack Stokes seizes your attention in an instant, wrapping it tighter around his finger as the night progresses. You climb the mountains of cheeky metaphor and loud language. Sonny speaks in prose like a pro, telling his story as he sees unfolding in front of him. You get the sense his eyes are a portal and you’re right there with him. With every expression, movement, and inflection, you learn about the lad bit by bit.
The show examines what it means to be a lad on the lash. To Sonny it’s necking pints to grow into a king, like his dad was. To escape and be what you want, or be nothing at all. To others it meant targeting Sonny for his sexuality. Sonny knows what the blood of hypermasculinity tastes like. It runs through the veins of Andrew-Tate-worshipping xenophobes. Condemning the small mindedness that tarnishes the glory of good lads, Sonny knows he’s got a good head on his shoulders to navigate them.
Sonny takes you on a night out that you’ve probably never been on, and most likely never will. If you let him take you down the rabbit hole, you’ll experience a fast night, with a few smoking area breaks to take the edge off.
