Blindly feeling his way on to the stage in a mask in a parody of the pretentious Artist, Seymour Mace is delighted with his recently received degree in Fine Art, and it fricking shows.

Having fallen out of love with comedy in recent years, Mace found himself in something of a rut creatively – he explains, leading him to further education and specifically to Fine Art, which he revels in discovering to to be not as la-di-da as the films and stories had led him to believe. Some comics have pictures illustrating their words: Mace has words illustrating his pictures. They are his pride and joy – and rightly so – front and centre, funny, provocative, carrying on the tradition of art satirising politics, sometimes violent, sometimes sweet, absurd, and surreal – Mace’s degree has tapped into his funny bones and revelled in the marrow.

He does include work from his graduation show (for which he got a First), ink on cardboard, ply, paper, and even canvas, as well as pieces specifically created for the Fringe. He even draws a couple more on the spot, emphasising the accessibility of it for all – even if you’re crap at drawing. He’s generous with this glee that he has found, even when still shot occasionally through with his familiar darker turns.

As we near the end of the show there are future drawing ideas, taking him through from past to present to onwards. These are silly, funny, random, and surreal. Of course. And may there be many more.

The Stand Comedy Club 2 – Stand 2, 13:20, 4-27 August 2023 (except 14th)
