Obviously, a bridge is somthing sturdy. It’s resolved, it’s perfect in its calculated arch and firm in its heavy brick or metalwork. It’s undeniable and mundane, something to be relied upon.
This central image perfectly encompasses the vision of love and loss John Sellar expresses in his poetry show, ‘Across a Love Locked Bridge’. These dual themes run concurrently through the anthology which Sellar calmly recites to his transfixed audience.
His style is distinct and approachable. Necessarily bound up in their varying Southern English settings, the poems are quietly reflective, mournful even. Gentle and restrained but with undeniable heart, the words hint at a life of passion whose fire has been mellowed through the passage of time.
Sellar himself acts as a bit of a guide during the reading, introducing each piece with the memory which sparked their creation or an anecdote about where he was in his life at the time that the poem is set. It’s a very comfortable and mellow experience, and our host generously gives us short intervals to decompress between sections of the anthology.
All of the poetry is enjoyable, but its eponymous final piece ‘Across a love Locked Bridge’ itself, is the standout which brings together all of its predecessors with its clarity and strong imagery. The bridge which had loomed for the hour is finally crossed, and excellently at that. It marks the completion of a highly enjoyable hour and a warm respite from some of the madder shows I’ve been rushing to and from all week. It is good for a poetry lover and simple enough to welcome a newbie.
