SXSW 2026 Set to Turn Downtown Austin into the World’s Most Ambitious Creative Playground

Seven days of music, film and innovation programming to run simultaneously for the first time, as the festival evolves its format and footprint

In a bold move to mark its fourth decade, SXSW has announced sweeping changes for its 2026 edition that will see downtown Austin transformed into a sprawling, immersive village for global creatives. Running from 12 to 18 March 2026, the festival will, for the first time, unify its music, film and innovation strands across a full week of programming, promising deeper collaboration between industries and a richer attendee experience.

The announcement, made Tuesday, details a significant expansion of the SXSW Music Festival, which grows to seven consecutive nights of showcases, while the long-running “Interactive” programme is reborn as SXSW Innovation, reflecting a broader reach that now encompasses health tech, sustainable business, marketing, startups and more.

“With the Austin Convention Center undergoing redevelopment, we’ve seized the chance to reimagine how SXSW lives across the city,” said Jenny Connelly, SXSW’s Director in Charge. “We’re leaning into the moment, delivering more immersive, meaningful experiences across a transformed city centre.”

SXSW EDU will run just prior, from 9 to 12 March, overlapping with the main event on its final day to encourage crossover between the education sector and creative industries.

SXSW 2026 will decentralise its footprint to reflect both necessity and ambition. The city centre will be divided into badge-specific “neighbourhoods,” each themed around the core programming strands: Music, Film & TV and Innovation. Platinum badge holders will have access to all areas, while each badge type also includes admission to keynotes, featured sessions, exhibitions and citywide experiences.

This new village-style format is designed to balance focused industry engagement with the spontaneous crossovers that have defined SXSW since its 1987 inception. “SXSW is about those unexpected collisions that lead to big ideas,” said Peter Lewis, Chief of Partnerships and Strategy. “This format lets us amplify that spirit while giving each community a real sense of home.”

Alongside the structural updates, SXSW has opened applications for PanelPicker®, the user-driven session proposal platform that allows the public to help shape the programming. Submissions for music showcases, SXSW Pitch, and the Innovation Awards are also live, with Film & TV Festival applications opening 29 July.

“The voice of the community remains the beating heart of SXSW,” said Greg Rosenbaum, VP of Programming and SXSW EDU Co-Founder. “This is an open call to get involved, to bring the ideas that will define what’s next.”

For music fans and industry insiders alike, the expansion of the Music Festival is a major headline. Seven nights of showcases across Austin’s best-loved venues will provide more exposure for emerging acts and more discovery moments for audiences.

“SXSW Music is levelling up in 2026,” said Brian Hobbs, VP of Music Festival Programming. “This is about giving artists more chances to break through and for fans to witness the next big thing up close.”

To mark the announcement, SXSW also unveiled its 2026 key art, a vibrant illustration created by Austin studio Overstory in collaboration with Taiwanese-American illustrator Josh Cochran. The artwork captures a bustling, reimagined downtown Austin filled with diverse creatives, embodying the festival’s “All Together Now” spirit.

SXSW’s reinvention in Austin is part of a wider evolution. Following the launch of SXSW Sydney in 2023 and the upcoming debut of SXSW London in 2025, the brand now offers a three-stop global circuit for creatives across continents.

As SXSW approaches its 40th year, the 2026 edition signals more than a milestone. It is a reassertion of the festival’s mission: to bring together the thinkers, makers and visionaries shaping our culture’s future.
