Joe Sutherland is trying to learn ‘straight man’ lingo and navigate life at 36.
Coming up to a 10 year anniversary with his boyfriend (cue ‘aws’ from the audience), Sutherland is thinking about big life milestones like having a baby or buying a Louis Vuitton handbag.
Most of the comedian’s jokes come from a gay cruise he has worked on. He shares the different scandalous things that happen onboard, but also the joy of seeing older gay men living their life. He passes on the stories as if you are two friends giggling in a bar.
Sutherland will often translate his jokes for any straight men in the room. He finds hyper masculine examples of his lifestyle such as his hobbies or being friends with women, which keeps the audience laughing every time.
Sutherland is trying to get hot, and has hired a personal trainer. He admits to the women in the room that he wants to be objectified but will happily take over from them. He will often relate to the women in the room, and create a comfortable connection.
Miss World also has some political aspects to it, where Sutherland talking about the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community, he goes into a quick rant about the state of the country that comes from the heart. He talks about empty activism with different merchandise. From this he creates various pieces of his own merchandise, one reading ‘protect aging twinks’. It is absolutely hilarious and camp
Sutherland is a skilled stand up, and the room is entranced by his work.
