Jonny Pelham is newly single and ready to talk about it.
Pelham is relaxed and easy going as he takes to the stage in The Hive, which he describes as smelling of ‘piss’. An immediate crowd pleaser.
Is It Me? is a jam packed stand up show that covers Pelham’s life. The show includes themes from previous shows as he mentions his experience with sexual abuse and therapy.
Pelham brings an awkward approach to comedy but keeps the audience’s attention throughout. He has the audience in the palm of his hand, as they laugh at most of his jokes, but Pelham doesn’t seem to believe this.
The show mostly follows how Pelham’s life and attitudes have changed since breaking up with his girlfriend. He discusses how to co parent a dog and his suffering sex life. He debates this all through his millennial lenses, that makes for a relatable show.
There are moments in the show that don’t always hit with the audience, as some make groaning noises at the more controversial jokes. Pelham’s style is dark humour, some may think he goes too far at times.
The description of the show suggests themes of ADHD and neurodiversity, but this is only mentioned once or twice.
The hour-long set itself flows effortlessly as Pelham masters stand up. He has many running jokes that he will keep going back to, which get funnier every time.
Jonny Pelham: Is It Me? 21:00, Hive 2 at Monkey Barrel Comedy until August 24
