It’s a bit of clown mayhem, a bit of theatre, a lot of God-knows what. At times Chonkers reminds me of Jim Carrey.  It’s all very silly and he does a good job making the audience chuckle at his antics.

He starts his routine as a faceless monk with silly audience interaction, high fives, rock paper scissors, daft dances.  All very idiotic but the crowd loves it.  He promises us comedy, poetry and theatre.  The rest that follows has no real structure apart from the announcement of each section.

The following is full-on physical comedy, throwing himself across the floor, making funny faces and voices.  There’s a running joke of hats descending in size which feels like it should have a better conclusion than it does.

A member of the audience is given a bell to ring if he goes ‘too far’ at any point.  I would have rung the bell much earlier into a lot of the gags, but he is much more tolerant than I am and allows Chonkers to play out his madness.

Mr Chonkers, Anatomy Lecture Theatre at Summerhall, 22:15, Until 24 Aug (not 18)
