I’m sure there’s an audience somewhere for Su Mi’s material but it wasn’t for the people I sat with. When the only laughs come out of awkwardness it heightens the disconnect from comic to crowd. I was jealous of the couple who left halfway through. I was also jealous of the audience member who ‘missed’ the set from holding up the projector screen.
It was really that bad.
I am astounded she felt comfortable putting on show the material she presents. It’s lacking, she hides it all with a clown get-up but even that doesn’t account for putting the audience through an hour of nothing.
The majority of Su’s set involved making funny faces and noises into a microphone, forcing audience participation in absurdity with no actual payoff. Running up and down stairs and doing nothing of note with any of the props she had with her. It’s all immature and if she reworked (basically everything) she might have something she could aim at children.
She shows footage of her as a child singing Peter Andre’s Mysterious Girl which is quite nice but is out of place. Su also gives a (genuinely) heartfelt message at the end about the struggles of an Asian queer comedian trying to make it in the industry – but unfortunately this isn’t enough to make up for terrible jokes.
I didn’t see one genuine laugh from the audience.
Don’t waste your time.
