Her Raving Mind follows Elektra as she navigates therapy after experiencing domestic abuse from her mother and husband.
This is a show inspired by writer Fenia Gianni’s personal experience and other survivor’s stories. It is evident that it comes from the heart and is performed with pure emotion and vulnerability.
The show is described as a drama and dark comedy; however, it lacks in the latter with only a few moments of humour.
This show consists of three cast members. The various characters often overlap to effectively show Elektra’s confused state of mind.
The show is well structured, with clear transitions from the past and present. The use of constant therapy sessions allows the character to explore feelings that connect with the audience.
In between therapy sessions and flashbacks, are times of dance, when Elektra’s emotions and tension come to the surface. These ‘raving’ moments are powerful alongside the effective use of sound and lights, which overall makes the production more polished.
There are times when the actors refer to how the audience is viewing the main character, which is beneficial as it helps the audience understand her thoughts.
The show is consistent in its quality until the ending, which feels unclear and confusing. The audience is left wanting more as it misses the mark.
This show follows a lot of heavy themes and so is not for everyone, but the topics are handled with grace and care.
