Welcome to our Entertainment Now WoW Awards for the second week of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Our first award for Best Debut goes to Molly McGuiness, whose show Slob at Monkey Barrel is a hilarious comic take on her love life, work struggles and recent brush with death.
It was recommended by our junior reviewer Abby Brunnen, who enjoyed the juxtaposition of silly and serious and was impressed by Molly’s description of the perfect ration of baked beans to sauce.
Our second award for Theatre goes to Eat the Rich (but maybe not me mates x) a comic play by Jade Franks about her own experience as a working class girl who goes to Cambridge.
Our reviewer Nina described the work, which is at the Pleasance, as “witty and amusing, but also heartfelt and genuine, leaving you with tears in your eyes.”
The award for Best Comedy goes to Joz Norris for his show: You Wait: Time Passes, which is at the Pleasance.
In her five star review Abby Brunnen described Joz as an “absurd genius” who treads the line between stand up and other forms of performance.
We have two awards for Kids Shows this week.
The Flying Bubble Show at Underbelly was described by Nina Aspey as “a calm and relaxing experience and “a real treat for the eyes.
Another award for outstanding work for children and families goes to Whale, Where Are You Now, which is part of the Taiwan Season and takes place at Assembly Roxy.
In her five star review Abby Brunnen loved the use of puppets and silent storytelling. She said: “kids gaze upon the whale shadows that shimmer on the walls, or look above at the handmade clouds and wind.”
The WoW Awards began in 2023 when Entertainment Now decided it would be a good idea to recognise outstanding shows Week On Week during the Fringe.
Rather than wait till the end to recognise outstanding show we thought it would be great to spread a bit of love earlier in the festival.
Outstanding shows are recommended by our team of reviewers.
Congratulations to all our winners.
