I’m initially intrigued by Kanan Gill’s reputation in India, where he is already an established name in comedy.
On stage, he comes across as a playful and laid-back guy, with a quiet confidence that gives his performance an effortless quality. He never seems desperate for the next laugh, instead giggling along with himself and settling naturally into his own rhythm and timing.
The show draws from his experiences growing up in India and from where he finds himself now, in Edinburgh at the Fringe,, with references to Indian culture and Punjabi language woven throughout.
For an audience member unfamiliar with some of these references, parts of the material are difficult to connect with. Gill is always quick to explain himself and keep the audience informed, but at times, this leaves some moments feeling more distant than funny.
Gill’s stage presence is difficult to fault. His observations of Gen Z are hilarious, and there is a clear sense of experience behind his performance. Absolutely no question that Gill is an accomplished performer, with a career that includes multiple stand-up specials, the hugely popular Pretentious Movie Reviews, and performing in countries all over the globe; his confidence and natural stage presence make for an enjoyable hour of comedy.
