Edfringe Comedy Review: Marc Jennings: If and When

Marc Jennings is a confident Glaswegian Scot, and his comedy finds plenty to laugh at in the country’s political and cultural identity.

Jennings takes aim at Nicola Sturgeon and her former husband Peter Murrell, while using Scotland’s political climate as a springboard for jokes about national identity, Glasgow life and the English perception of Scots as “tight as f**k”. The material feels patriotic and passionate.

It is impressive and almost satisfying in the way Jennings recycles jokes and references from earlier in the set, bringing them back at just the right moment. It gives the hour a pleasing sense of construction and makes the comedy feel more considered than a string of disconnected topics.

The highlight comes in the closing story about a woman Jennings has been seeing. What begins as an anecdote becomes a narrative; the audience is heavily invested in discovering where it is heading. The payoff lands brilliantly, and Jennings again links it right back to the start of the show.

Jennings is a relaxed, very likeable character, delivering a show that combines sharp observations with storytelling in a hilariously Scottish fashion.

Marc Jennings: If and When, 19:35 at Monkey Barrel Comedy – Monkey Barrel 1 at 7:35pm from August 4-16th – 18-30th
