Celebrating their tenth year at the Edinburgh Fringe, Stamptown feels like a controlled collision of everything that can go right on stage. This variety show is relentless; one moment Viggo Venn, the winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2023, is working the room; the next, Jacklin Fury emerges with a guitar case containing a sword, and proceeds to fully insert it down her mouth, only for the sword to become four. It is completely absurd and somehow gets more ridiculous from there.
The cast fully embraces the chaos; the show goes in five different directions in the space of a minute, you are left dazed by the bizarre storyline but utterly captivated. The contrasts are amazing, from comedians to jugglers, but this was a different type of juggling, with four different umbrellas using nothing but her feet. Meanwhile, a storyline emerges involving a billionaire attempting to buy the entire cast, providing some of the biggest laughs of the evening.
What makes Stamptown so effective is its universal appeal. The audience spans generations, yet the laughter is constant throughout the show. Hosted by Zack Tucker, he is proving to be one of the most talented performers at this year’s fringe. Its unpredictability is brilliantly stupid and utterly impressive.
