Edfringe Theatre Review: Ludwig: Unfinished Business

Beethoven arrives on stage convinced he has unfinished business, and much of that business is settling old scores. Mike Hatchard’s solo show imagines the composer in his final moments, looking back on a life defined by an arrogant father, a bitter rivalry with Mozart, and an ego to match his genius. It’s a promising premise, but the execution is patchy.

The undeniable highlight is Hatchard’s musicianship. His ability to rattle off technically demanding pieces while mid-monologue is genuinely impressive, and a moment where he plays a Mozart piece with his hands behind his back draws a well-earned gasp. The comedy fares less consistently: there are some sharp, clever jokes in here, even if a fair few didn’t land with this particular crowd, and Hatchard’s own “tough crowd” aside suggested he felt it too.

The bigger issue is structural. The show doesn’t settle into a clear narrative, drifting instead through anecdotes and references to rival composers that land as often as they miss. Names and details occasionally get tangled, and the storytelling can feel more rambling than purposeful.

There’s real talent on display, particularly at the keys, but as a piece of theatre it doesn’t quite hang together.

Ludwig: Unfinished Business, 12:35, Assembly George Street – Front Room, Aug 6-11, 13-30
