Madeleine Brettingham: It’s One Big Obstacle

Rising star Madeleine Brettingham is bringing her first show Legend to this year’s Fringe, after winning So You Think You’re Funny in 2005.

Brand new to the comedy circuit, she’s been working her socks off for the last year and promises to bring a debut hour packed with gags, stories and real heart. She talks to Entertainment Now about her Fringe heroes, her secret ambition and about her plans to stay up all night at least once.

Tell us about your show. Why should we go and see it?

It’ll show you how to be a legend – or not. Also it has a story, a stunt and lots of jokes.

What is your favourite thing about your show?

The ending. The words. There’s a description of monkeys I really like saying. The fact it has made something bad funny. I feel quite narcissistic answering this question, I’ll be honest.

Do you have a Fringe idol?

Loads. But I always go and see Simon Munnery

What three words best describe your performance style – and why?

A warm, cuddly, relatable everywoman who wouldn’t look out of place on Saturday Kitchen. If that sounds like your sort of thing, don’t Google me, just buy the ticket.

Who are you looking forward to seeing in Edinburgh?

I made a list of shows I wanted to see and there were hundreds. There are too many good comedians in this town. But, as a tall woman, I’m really looking forward to seeing Lou Wall’s show.

What do you hope to achieve in Edinburgh – what are your hopes and dreams?

I want to attract a mysterious benefactor who sees my show and writes me a check for one million pounds on the spot. I’m deadly serious about this. Almost every fantasy I have about the Fringe features them heavily.

What are the biggest obstacles you face as a performer at the Fringe?

It’s one big obstacle. But I’m throwing myself at it like a contestant on Total Wipeout.

What do you hope the audience will take away after an hour in your company?

If they have taken something away, I will have failed.

How do you plan to relax and recharge when not on stage?

Hanging out with people I like. Swimming. Reading. I’ve brought a big pile of books and I want to spend at least some time lying in a park and reading them in the sun. Realistically I’ll probably manage that for about five minutes. But it’s good to have a dream.

What is your idea of a perfect Fringe day?

I saw an amazing sunset from Arthur’s Seat last year and I really want to repeat the experience, but I think the sun sets when my show is on so maybe I’ll try staying up all night instead.
