‘4AM‘ is the highly anticipated debut single by 20 year old south london singer/songwriter Sucker. It’s an ode to making bad decisions to prevent yourself from making even worse decisions, and living every moment in the ultimate unsociable hour, 4AM, to prevent anybody stopping you. The single was inspired by a 3 day bout of insomnia in July 2020, where she would sit at her kitchen table and overthink, until looking over at the clock and realising another night had slipped away. Sonically, 4AM is influenced by artists like Jack White and Fiona Apple.
Sucker is a 20 year old musician from South London, hailing from the same small stomping ground where artists like David Bowie and Siouxie Sioux first began to take the world by storm. Citing influence from a wide variety of artists, such as Depeche Mode, Taylor Swift, Ultravox, Audioslave, Jensen McRae and Halsey, she is an exciting new artist emerging from an increasingly genreless world of music. With compelling vocals and razor sharp songwriting, Sucker is perfectly poised to become your new favourite artist.

We are almost through 2021, how has this year been for you so far?
Both one of the most exciting and one of the most depressing years of my life. A real mix of moments where I thought everything was coming together and going my way, and then swiftly being pulled out from under me.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Temperamental, stubborn, caring.
How did you get into your current career?
I always knew I wanted to be a musician, from when I was tiny. I was a weird, over-articulate child who bottled up how she felt until she had all the words for it, which sometimes meant the bottle smashed and unleashed emotional chaos with no understanding of what’s wrong. I’m also terrible at keeping a diary, so I just wrote songs about how I felt instead, and when I finally started playing them for people I was told I was actually pretty good at it.
How would you describe your work?
Like an outburst. The songs always centre around different aspects, anger, sorrow, depression, joy, excitement, devotion, etc etc. But they’re always displayed in my music and writing as an outburst of someone who literally couldn’t keep it inside anymore.
What do you want people to take away from it?
That melodrama is your friend. Don’t let anyone take it away from you.
What inspires you and who are your influences?
Musically, I’m inspired by pretty much everything and everyone. I was brought up being fed prog rock and jazz by my dad, to new romantic pop and female fronted alternative rock by my mum, and everything in-between. In terms of songwriting it’s also pretty varied, but Jack White, Jensen Mcrae, Taylor Swift, Fiona Apple, and Halsey are the writers who immediately spring to mind when I think of who leaves me speechless when I hear their work.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t worry so much about what people think of you. It’s worse if they don’t think of you at all.
What’s next for you? What are you most excited for?
I’m super excited to start playing shows again!! I’ve missed the electricity of playing live so desperately over the past 2 years. Hopefully I should also have some more music coming out early next year!
