Music: Nostalgia and Optimism from Berlin-based Jordan

Jordan is a singer from Dublin, now based in Berlin. Her EP Driving Back to Love was the story of a love affair – with a strong sense of nostalgia and optimism for the future. This Indie artist takes her inspiration from vintage sounds and is known for her ability to tell stories in song.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your EP, ‘Driving Back To Love’? What personal experiences influenced the writing of these songs?

The main inspiration was a personal experience of mine being in a long term relationship that came to an end. I wanted to show the ups and downs that are natural in any relationship and in my case the relationship had an end. I used feelings I had throughout the relationship and the breakup to influence the direction the songs went in but I also tend to build upon those feelings to create a story for the songs.

How did your move from Dublin to Berlin impact your music style and creative process?

As I grew up in Dublin and then in Germany, the move to Berlin helped my creative process in the way of introducing me to new people to work with. I always had a wide range of genres I listened to as a result of both places so I guess you could say that it helped me discover which sound was the one that fit me the best.

You’ve cited influences like The 1975 and Purple Disco Machine. How have these artists shaped your sound, and are there any specific elements of their music that you’ve incorporated into your own?

I would say The 1975 had a bigger influence but both have the vintage sound mixed in with a modern one so well and I knew that was what I wanted for my music. Something that myself and my producer/co-writer Cione love that The 1975 do is their backing vocals and interesting sounds in the background that you may not always pick up on but add to the sound design in general. We really wanted to make sure that my songs sound full but not overdone, that if you listen carefully there is always something special in the background. For example, a clip of my producer Cione and I speaking to each other can be heard in one or two of the tracks.

The title track, ‘Driving Back To Love’, chronicles a relationship’s journey. Could you share more about the story and emotions behind this song?

I was with my previous partner for seven years, we went to school together and it was a beautiful relationship but as we were so young we of course ended up growing up which had its ups and downs as we were discovering who we are and who we want to be. There was a lot of love there and I wanted to make sure that the song tapped into the feeling of there might be a struggle right now but if there is the love still and if we work on things, we can get back to what we once were.

What was it like collaborating with Cione and Janek on this EP? How did their contributions shape the final sound of your music?

It was amazing and so much fun! I couldn’t have wished for better people to work with. We were thrown together and had never met before in our first session and we quickly realized that we click well. Cione’s sound design in his productions, his really fun ideas of how to create something unique was perfect for what I saw for my music and Janek has the amazing skill of coming up with amazing ideas (lyrics/melodies etc) on the spot and always having so many of them. We all brought something of our own to our sessions and I learnt a lot from the both of them that has definitely helped me with figuring out my sound.
