Music: Paige Drobot: From Farmers Markets to Freak Beat

Singer songwriter Paige Drobot is known for her fusion of rock, doo wop, nostalgic pop and freak beat. The Winnipeg based musician has just released a new single ‘Alien Girl’ – the story of feeling cut off from the world. She tells Entertainment Now about her musical journey so far.

How did your musical project first start? Is there a story to tell about it?

I have been performing and recording music for nearly 20 years since I was a 12-year-old borrowing a tape recorder from the school library. I got on to DAW when I hit my teens. I grew up rurally, but moved to the “big city” Winnipeg, MB, as soon as I could and began performing with a band I formed called The Psychics.

What was your first gig?

My first gig ever was busking at farmers’ markets as a child. I learned quickly that even though I have a weird voice, more cash hit the guitar case when I was singing, than when I just played the guitar.

What three words best describe your musical style and why?

Can I go with four? Too Real Freak Rock. I am an extremely candid person and also an improviser.

Tell us about your new release.

I am putting out a 45 on Transistor 66 Records. I had these two songs that I have been performing for a long time, that I thought would be perfect in a novelty format, rather than on the upcoming album. The A-Side is “Alien Girl”, and I just released my most ambitious music video to go along with it, but the B-Side is a song about clogging a toilet. I like a silly 2 nd side. When I was a small kid I really liked to listen to a 45 by Johnny B. Goode (B Side: “My ding a ling” ). Both of these songs have a really retro feel to them, one early 60’s and one late 60s, so in my mind, the appropriate format is a 45 rpm 7” Record. I think one of the only ways to tell it’s not an old record, is the lyrics.

What inspires your lyrics?

I write in a personally therapeutic, stream-of-consciousness style. To get something off of my chest, with no edits.

Do you have any upcoming tour dates?

No travel plans right now, but we are hosting a release party for the new record on November 8th in Winnipeg. You can find more info on my website.

What are you/your band working on next?

I am blessed with a family band and a home studio, so we are always working on something. We are about halfway through a full-length record right now.
