Hailing from the vast landscapes of Namibia, Sasha Dawe brings his poetic storytelling and captivating acoustic soundscapes to the forefront with his latest single, Who I Am. Following the success of his debut album The Boat in 2023, Sasha’s music continues to redefine modern folk, blending timeless country-folk traditions with contemporary blues and African influences.
In Who I Am, Sasha channels his rich roots to craft a deeply personal and universal exploration of heritage and identity. “This song is a realisation of my heritage and purpose,” he says.
Drawing inspiration from the sun, both as a life-giver and a universal symbol of hope, he delves into its para-religious significance, by looking within and challenging deeply rooted assumptions. Sasha creatively receives insight into his own nature, allowing the listener to be part of that journey.
The single showcases Sasha’s signature acoustic style, weaving soft guitar melodies, dreamy piano embellishments, and soulful phrasing. His soothing vocals and reflective production create a soundscape reminiscent of folk legends like John Martyn, Leonard Cohen, and José González, while retaining a distinctive authenticity that is uniquely his own.
The accompanying music video was filmed in the breathtaking Spitzkoppe region of Namibia, home to the world’s oldest desert. Set against this ancient and awe-inspiring backdrop, the video captures the sun’s profound symbolism and its connection to Sasha’s roots, offering viewers a vivid glimpse into the artist’s world around him.
Drawing from his unconventional upbringing and a lifelong love for storytelling, Sasha continues to push the boundaries of modern folk, blending genres and perspectives into music that is as timeless as it is deeply personal.
