Irem Bekter has released her latest single, “Miscommunication (Lost In Transmission),” taken from her forthcoming album The Winding Road.
Originally from Istanbul and now based in Montreal, Bekter brings together influences from Turkish folk, jazz, world music and cinematic indie pop. “Miscommunication (Lost In Transmission)” reflects that international perspective, weaving English, French and a Spanish rap by Akawui over a Turkish folk rhythm to explore the ways people can struggle to truly understand one another.
The track features arrangements by Jean Massicotte alongside contributions from Akawui, Yves Desrosiers, David Ryshpan, Mathieu Deschenaux, Olivier Bussières and Lu Horta.
Bekter’s music has drawn comparisons to artists including Lhasa de Sela, Beirut, Barbatuques and Ibrahim Maalouf for its blend of storytelling, layered rhythms and cinematic textures.
Since settling in Montreal in 2007, Bekter has become an active presence in the local music scene, founding the Irem Bekter Quintet and performing at the Montreal International Jazz Festival alongside releasing the albums Primero and Je suis ici.
Her upcoming album The Winding Road continues that genre-crossing approach, combining Turkish and Argentinian rhythms with electronic, jazz and indie influences.
