Healthcare Announces Self Titled Debut Album

After spending two decades away from making music following a chronic illness diagnosis, songwriter Stephen Canfield has returned with Healthcare, the debut album from his new project of the same name.

Blending Americana, indie folk, and ambient influences, the self-titled record explores themes of illness, grief, resilience, and renewal through intimate songwriting and layered arrangements. Canfield cites artists including Emmylou Harris, Wilco, Brian Eno, and The War on Drugs as key influences.

“I didn’t pick up an instrument for more than a decade,” Canfield says. “These songs came from the emotions I never had the chance to process during that time.”

The album was inspired in part by the Celtic concept of “thin places,” where boundaries between different stages of life become less distinct. It also carries a charitable mission, with 100 percent of profits from physical album sales being donated to MusiCares to support musicians in need of medical care.

Healthcare features contributions from collaborators whose credits include Kacey Musgraves, H.E.R., and Daniel Caesar, while the project’s visual identity was created by two-time Grammy-winning designer Lawrence Azerrad. Former KCRW host Tricia Halloran has already praised the record’s writing as “10/10 songwriting.”
