The Event:

Bafta TV Awards 2021 Winners are some the brightest talent in the TV industry. The event which premiered on 6 June honoured stars from I May Destroy You, Small Axe, and Sex Education, all highly acclaimed programmes. Moreover, we saw comedian Richard Ayoade hosted the ceremony expertly for the second time in a row.

Firstly, Olly Alexander, the lead singer of Years and Years’, kicked off the ceremony by performing his new single, Starstruck, on an outdoor stage, dressed in a stylish co-ord. With this beautiful melody in the back, we could see the red-carpet arrivals. For instance, Werucke Opia, Billie Piper and Nicola Coughlan posed glamorously for photographs.

The audience must have been starstruck as the show began (who wouldn’t?!). They watched the comedian, Romesh Ranganathan, win the first accolade of the night for The Ranganation. This award was for the category of entertainment performance.

Some Notable Moments:

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest winners of the night, was I May Destroy You. They didn’t just win the prize for mini-series but also for leading actress. Michaela Coel delivering a poignant speech about the value of intimacy coordinators on set.

Diversity could be seen graciously accepting The Virgin must-see moment award. This Bafta Award is voted for by the public. They were clearly moved by Diversity’s compelling Black Lives Matter-inspired performance on Britain’s Got Talent in 2020. However, as the star Ashley Banjo received the award, she recalled the “dark time” they had experienced after the routine. Although she mentioned that they received a ‘torrent of racially charged abuse’, she ended her acceptance speech by thanking ‘everyone who stood by us, every phone call, text, comment, DM’.

Paul Mescal, the star of Normal People, took home the award for leading actor. More importantly, we saw a sweet gesture as he dedicated the accolade to his co-star Daisy Edgar Jones, who had been nominated for the leading actress category.

Lastly, Aimee Lou Wood, a star at Sex Education, screamed as she took to the stage to accept the award for her win for female performance in a comedy programme.
