The Great Escape Day 2 Reviews

Art D’Ecco – Latest Music Bar

One of the best I saw at Sxsx in Austin in March and they don’t disappoint today.  Electro pop at its finest fronted by a bonafide rock star!  Over from British Columbia in Canada and signed to cool indie Paper Bag records this act is on the way to the big time with super catchy but cool songs and a swagger to match. One of my favourite bands of the decade. 5 plus stars

The Vanns – TGE Beach Stage

Aussie melodic guitar act opens the day with an early set just past midday. Strong songs and a frontman who is very easy on the eye and who captures the hearts of the audience and play to a packed tent. In part mellow and part rock to a core makes the band a very interesting proposition. This is a band who should get snapped up to a major record label and play stadiums in the next few years.  Musically it’s Bryan Adams meets Foo Fighters! 5 stars

Azure Ryder – Amazon New Music Stage

Originally from Sydney now london based this interesting songwriter has a huge career ahead of her.  The 26 has a depth to her songwriting ahead of her years.  A star on the rise 5 stars

Didirri – Beach Stage

Solo artist from Melbourne with a voice like butter this young singer songwriter could go far. Chilled songs that are beyond his years lyrically interesting. 4 stars

Beckha Armani – MVT stage

Tanzanian-born, Burundi-raised, Australian-based singer songwriter has a seem-less voice and personal lyrics that resonates. Her latest single ‘I Don’t Know Why I Don’t Leave You’ is simply sublime. 4 stars

Hawxx – Volts

Industrial, all girl band Hawxx look awesome, Teenage girls will love them, there a some stage presence issues but thats a minimal gripe. ‘Trust your Rage’ a song about womens safety, showed off singers range but she needs better control over voice. 3.5 stars

Broadside Hacks – One Church

The stage was packed, a double bassist, a  violinist, an alto sax and a trio of vocalists and many more form this collective. Their folky sound was messy, I don’t think I’ve heard this genre sound chaotic before. 2 star

False heads – Brighthelm

Weak lyrics but great beats that you expect from a poprock band. An easy listen. Iggy Pop is apparently a fan, I can’t help but think it’s a bit straightforward so maybe Iggy is making safer choices in his twilight years. Quietest I’ve seen this venue all weekend but it’s a lot of thick sound for a three piece. Burped in to the microphone which was super gross. I think they could be good though. 3.5 stars for this show but I believe they can do better

Go For It Tribe – Waterbear

Arrived at Waterbear to charismatic bar tender Emma living for it, she told me she had seen them sound checking and would not disappoint, and they didn’t. This London based hip hop collective deserve a bigger stage. Some really incredible rapping, lyrics and beats. 5 Stars

Micromoon – Volks

A tough watch, the venue was filled with the strong smell of incense. Unremarkable 2 stars.

Plantoid – The Beach Stage

Psychedelic jazz fusion that just sounded a little messy to my ear. 2 stars
