Q&A with British duo Paper Hands

Back in July, duo Paper Hands released their debut single ‘Early Warning’ on their own label via Tunecore. Their track takes inspiration from 80s influenced pop and nuanced new wave, to modern rock with layered angsty lyrics.

We chat to Jordan Campbell and Billy Taylor of Paper Hands about how 2022 has been for them so far, musical influences and upcoming projects…

What has 2022 been like for you so far?

It’s really been the start for us! We started this whole thing during lockdown and have been excited to finally release our music. So the majority of ‘22 has been anticipating that!

How did the idea come about to form the duo?

We’ve been best mates since we were toddlers but have never made music together until Covid hit and locked us all away! It all started with a voicenote for a song idea and exploded from there. That voicenote turned into this debut single!

How would you describe your sound in three words?

Just like us?

Who are your musical influences?

It’s a real mixed bag, anything from classic pop and new wave to modern metal. We’re into pretty weird stuff too and I think that can often sleep into r songwriting process and we end up ‘toning down’ the weirdness a bit haha! We have been described as a mix between Biffy Clyro and Twenty One Pilots which we think is pretty accurate though!

Pete Maher mastered your recent debut single release ‘Early Warning’. How was this contact made?

Billy made the connection a while ago and has been lucky enough to work with him in the past. He’s an incredible mastering engineer and has worked with some huge names. We engineer and mix our songs ourselves and it’s great to have someone with such a special catalogue of work come in and finish off the hard work!

Do you have any upcoming plans for 2022?

Yes! We will be shooting the video for our next single next month and that will be released very soon! We have a whole load of singles ready to go and can’t wait to get them out.
