Celebrating what would have marked his 58th wedding anniversary, beloved TV personality and accomplished author Sir Michael Palin shared poignant reflections with Lorraine today, reminiscing on the profound bond he shared with his late wife, Helen Gibbins, spanning over five decades. Nearly one year since her passing, Palin opened up about grappling with the absence left in his home upon returning from a recent trip to Nigeria. Despite her physical absence, he confessed to continuing conversations with her, seeking her wisdom and guidance.

“In a peculiar way, I seek solace. She had an uncanny knack for steering me away from missteps and toward the right path. She understood my nuances, recognizing when I found joy in my work versus moments of unease—I sorely miss that,” Palin shared.

“Our shared laughter, our inside jokes—those are the threads of connection I long for dearly. With each passing anniversary, our escapades grew more absurd… That camaraderie, I sorely miss,” he lamented.

Reflecting on their remarkable six-decade companionship, Palin acknowledged, “I knew Helen for 60 years, a lifetime of shared experiences that require no grand gestures to affirm.”

Addressing the role of his career in navigating grief, he emphasized the necessity of forward momentum. “You can’t linger in the past, halting all progress. I’m fortunate to have ongoing projects that whisk me across the globe, invigorating both body and mind—a vital tonic for morale,” Palin remarked.

When queried about future travel plans, Palin quipped, “People often jest, ‘Is there anywhere you haven’t ventured, Michael?’ My cheeky retort used to be ‘Middlesbrough,’ but alas, even that’s crossed off the list now… We’ll see how this journey unfolds. The audience’s response will dictate our next steps. Thus far, the reception has been positive, and another expedition would be a delight.”

Watch Lorraine weekdays from 9am on ITV1 & ITVX
