REVIEW: Tom Felton – ‘Red’ & ‘Orange’

The cover art for both EPs, they are the same image of Tom looking directly in to the camera with leaves falling behind him but one has an orange filter and the other a red

Actor Tom Felton has been quietly releasing music for years, his loyal army of fans lap it up, and being a millennial, the algorithms did their job and I was served ‘Red’ Felton’s two song EP that was released two months ago.

The sound is sun drenched California beach bum crossed with the Surrey Hills, ‘Fairies & Feathers’ is the standout track for me. Delicate female backing vocals complement Tom’s lead, creating a genre-spanning experience. Is it modern folk? Perhaps, but it also features ska-esque horns and a touch of Jack Johnson’s vibe.

I may be making it sound like 10lbs of shit in a 2lb bag but its not, its super catchy, I’m surprised it hasn’t become a trending sound on TikTok.

Take me AwaY is more melancholy, and really shows off Felton’s voice, he doesn’t have a flashy vocal range or a huge belt but a more subtle natural talent and its refreshing to hear a vocal that hasn’t been overproduced. Lyrically it’s a standout, a beautiful song about love and loss

This weekend ‘Orange’ dropped, another two track offering, hOLDing On is lyrically cute, it paints a picture of enduring love and featured a middle 8 that warranted 4 skip backs.

iN my ArMs delivers a stripped back experience with subtle production and offers and what I am pretty sure is a one take vocal, the song is peppered with little chuckles, telling people that Felton doesn’t take himself too seriously and this is a passion project we are being presented with and not a bid for musical stardom

Will we get more colours? Can we expect the full rainbow? If so, I’m sure we will find gold at the end of it.
