Josh Elton is Away With The Fairies in his Fringe debut, and asks the question – how many 12-year-olds could you take in a fight?
Elton talks us through his journey of becoming a comedian, starting from antisemitic bullying as a child which led him to discover comedy. He talks graphically of being forced into a puddle and being saved by his older brother.
The Welsh comedian candidly reminisces to the start of his career, feeling like he must exaggerate or lie to make people laugh. This leaves the audience wondering whether tonight’s show is the truth.
Elton tells some unbelievable stories, and the crowd cannot stop laughing. He shares a standout story about his car and a bollard, which ends up on multiple news outlets including BBC News. However, I can’t help but think that there can’t be much going on in Swansea.
There are also stories of early comedy shows, which are still engrained in Elton’s brain. One so bad, it triggered a crisis for the comedian, who was left replaying moments of the disaster for days after. Elton turns to a therapist friend for help, and repeats the hilarious Dr Seuss inspired poem that helped him break the cycle.
The comedian reminisces on one moment that changed his comedy, when he saw a group of 12-year-olds fighting a cat caller. He remembers retelling the story at a show not long after, and how it changed the game.
Elton produces non stop laughs and can be confident that he has found the right style that will take him far.
