Edfringe Review: Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett

Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett starts as soon as you enter the room. It is a sexy and raunchy show, challenging societal norms.

The atmosphere is provocative, with low lighting and red accents. Bernie Dieter knows how to set the scene, as each performer circles the audience before they begin. She is a powerhouse who provokes the audience to make them comfortable.

Each performer is as good as the last, scantily clad in lingerie or nothing at all. Despite being very different, each carries the same ambience to contribute to the show’s mood. Club Kabarett presents traditional acts but goes beyond the binary.

Each performer has their dedicated time, often against the backdrop of Dieter’s vocals. The songs are perfectly paired against the skill and make for a whole spectacle. Acts include gymnasts and drag queens as the list goes on.

The acts are jaw droppingly impressive, with one woman fire breathing and sword eating. Personally, this was a moment I had to cover my eyes for, as the fluorescent sword lit up the entirety of her body. A hilarious moment involving a drag queen and a cake must be my favourite.

Dieter talks about the inspiration for her Kabarett, including her grandmother’s involvement. Every time Dieter enters, she is dolled up in a new outfit, some with a political influence, with one spreading a pro-choice message. This powerful moment triggers an applause from the audience.

The show is fantastically thought out and presented. The acts appear comfortable on stage as the crowds cheer them on, everyone is having a great time.

Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett, 19:20, The Beauty at Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows, until 23rd August (not 18th)
