There is a new science show on the scene at the Fringe. All the way from Western Australia, Magnus D Magnus (the D standing for danger, which is very fitting for the show) has brought some of the loudest explosions and visual science experiments for kids to Edinburgh.
Magnus D Magnus is announced in his self-introduction as “the most idiotic genius in the world” and he is here to test his bravery with extreme heat and coolness.
Magnus manages to captivate the kids and keep them entertained between experiments. In fact he is very much like a kid himself, with random outbursts and what can only be described as “PFFFFTTTTSSS”.
Everything runs incredibly smoothly until he tricks the audience with a ‘failed experiment’ which dramatically (thanks to the lights and sound from the production) turns out to be one of the most exciting parts of the show, going by the number of screaming children.
While careless with his goggles and gloves, Magnus is the opposite with the kids. He shows a touching interest in having little helpers who might think “differently”. He makes it clear early on that he has no degree, “instead of a BA or PHD, I have ADHD”, which is most likely why he asks certain questions to the audience to try and choose kids that may see through a similar lens.
It proves a challenging task as every single kid in the room shoots up their hand as soon as the word ‘volunteer’ is uttered.
The Explosive Science Show is great for families, with a couple of jokes here and there thrown in for the adults, too. Magnus zips around the stage, confident and brave, as he plays with literal fire.
Explosive Science Show! , 10.30, Assembly, George Square, Gordon Aikman Theatre, until August 25
