On Saturday 8 November, London’s legendary Troxy will host one of the wildest, funniest and most unpredictable shows on the planet as Lucha VaVOOM makes its long-awaited UK debut.
Hailed by Eric Idle as “funnier, sillier and more entertaining than any other show,” and described by Vanity Fair as “a madcap mix of Mexican wrestling, comedy and vintage burlesque,” this cult phenomenon has thrilled audiences around the globe since its launch in Los Angeles back in 2002. The Los Angeles Times put it best, “Far-out flamboyance always prevails at Lucha VaVOOM.”
At its heart, Lucha VaVOOM is a love letter to Lucha Libre, the fast-paced Mexican wrestling tradition where good and evil clash in breakneck, one-fall matches. Expect masked luchadors flown in from Mexico, the US and beyond, bringing cartoon-like theatrics and high-octane stunts that defy belief.
But that’s just the beginning. Between the wrestling bouts, audiences will be treated to a jaw-dropping variety bill featuring the world’s most electrifying acts. Previous shows have included live music from Peaches, comedy from Fred Armisen and Jack Black, and unforgettable performances from stars such as Drag Race winner Violet Chachki, Guinness World Record-holding hula-hooper Marawa the Amazing and the roller-skating daredevils La Roller Girls. Every show is a unique blend of wild spectacle, sharp comedy and unfiltered fun.
With sell-out shows for 35,000 fans in Paris, at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival, Calgary’s High-Performance Rodeo and Australia’s Big Day Out, Lucha VaVOOM has already conquered stages around the world. Now, the UK finally gets its turn to experience the full-force, glam-slam chaos.
The mastermind behind it all is Rita D’Albert, who created Lucha VaVOOM to deliver joy on an unapologetically grand scale. Raised in Southern California’s counterculture scene, Rita has built a career on producing explosive, oddball entertainment. She previously made waves with her cult hit White Trash Wins Lotto, a satirical rock opera that stormed the HBO Comedy Festival and earned rave reviews in New York and Los Angeles.
For Rita, bringing Lucha VaVOOM to London has always been the dream.
“I wasn’t a wrestling person at first,” she explains. “But when I saw Lucha Libre, I fell in love. The masks, the characters, the outrageous feats of physicality—it blew my mind. It’s like the best punk shows I’d seen, mixed with incredible theatrics, comedy, music and daredevil performers. It’s a wrestling show for people who don’t even like wrestling, as well as those that do. London has always been on my list, and I know this city is ready for it.”
If you think you’ve seen it all, think again. Lucha VaVOOM is a once-in-a-lifetime night out where flamboyance reigns, mayhem rules and the outside world disappears in a blur of glitter, laughter and adrenaline.
