Kevin Farge returns with Country Love Song, an ambitious 27-track collection that draws together folk, jazz, alt-country and Latin influences into a richly textured and deeply personal listening experience.
Recorded in a cabin surrounded by mango trees above a surf break in Costa Rica, the album reflects the environment in which it was created. Across its expansive running time, Farge weaves together elements of orchestral indie pop, Texas slowcore, Brazilian jazz and country songwriting, creating a record that feels both intimate and far-reaching.
At the heart of Country Love Song is Farge’s warm and conversational voice. Whether reflecting on memory, distance or belonging, his performances carry a sense of honesty that grounds the album’s diverse musical palette.
The record thrives on collaboration. “Frijoles” pairs breezy bossa nova rhythms with the contributions of composer and longtime Devendra Banhart collaborator Gregory Rogove, while “Memphis” sees Little Wings join Farge for a tender alt-country duet. On “A Little More Fun,” Farge and Kyle Field share an easy chemistry, while “Two Bags of Rice” channels restless energy through rhythmic Brazilian influences.
Several tracks highlight Farge’s ability to bring different traditions together in unexpected ways. “Good Girls” combines country storytelling with Latin rhythms and indie-rock momentum, while “Never Gonna Back Down” layers strings, breakbeats and acoustic guitar into a resilient anthem shaped by themes of perseverance and determination.
Elsewhere, the album slows down to reveal moments of reflection. “Mariel Pt. 2” offers a meditative look at impermanence, while “Sing for Me, Darling” captures both the beauty and unpredictability of the tropical landscape that surrounds Farge’s daily life. Raised between cultures by an American father and Costa Rican mother, Farge has spent the last six years living in his mother’s village, surfing, travelling by bicycle and recording music from a home studio immersed in its surroundings. That experience informs every corner of Country Love Song, from its relaxed pacing to its vivid sense of place.
Despite its length, the album remains focused on a central theme: the coexistence of different identities, perspectives and traditions. As Farge explains, “I grew up between worlds. This album is what it sounds like when those worlds stop arguing and start singing together. It’s about being still enough to hear everything.”
