Sylvain Zebo Blends French Pop and Reflection on New Single “Test”

French singer-songwriter Sylvain Zebo has released his latest single, “Test,” a thoughtful and atmospheric track that combines elements of French pop and pop rock with reflective lyricism and polished production.

Drawing on a tradition of lyric-driven French songwriting, Zebo delivers a song that balances emotional depth with melodic accessibility. Built around shimmering synthesizers and a distinctive guitar motif, “Test” creates an immersive soundscape that gradually unfolds while exploring themes of love, personal growth and the complexities of modern life.

According to Zebo, the song developed organically during the writing process. While the synthesizer parts were initially composed on piano, the track truly came together when he discovered the guitar riff that anchors the chorus.

“I composed the synth parts with the piano, but it was when I found the guitar riff for the chorus that everything became fluid and ethereal,” he explains. “The lyrics were added later, reflecting on the ups and downs of life, passions, feelings, and love, along with our often dehumanized experiences.”

Entirely self-produced, “Test” highlights the breadth of Zebo’s creative involvement. Serving as songwriter, arranger, producer and sound engineer, he has crafted a recording that feels both intimate and expansive while remaining true to his artistic vision.

Zebo’s musical journey reflects a diverse cultural and artistic background. Of Martinican heritage, he was born in Madagascar before growing up in Lescar, near Pau in southern France. Inspired by artists such as Neil Young and Georges Brassens, he learned guitar at an early age and performed in various rock and blues bands while developing his own songwriting style.

After relocating to Paris, Zebo dedicated himself fully to music, studying piano and vocal performance while building his reputation as a live performer. His debut album, Consacre Moi, was recorded near Cincinnati in 2010 with a group of acclaimed American musicians and funded through the fan-supported platform Sellaband.

Over the years, he has continued to evolve while maintaining complete creative independence. Albums including Masque, Longitudinal, Fortunes and Enveloppe have explored a range of styles, from acoustic songwriting to sophisticated pop arrangements and emotionally rich soundscapes. Since 2018, he has also performed regularly in Montreal alongside established Canadian musicians.
