Australian alternative funk-rock and psychedelic outfit Scizzorman return with their new concept album, HOW TO GET YOUR LIFE RIGHT WITH WHAT’S LEFT, a seven-track collection that moves between funk, glam, psychedelia, stoner rock and swamp blues.
The album arrives after a post-pandemic hiatus and a period of writer’s block, with the band emerging in late 2024 with a collection of songs shaped by observations, anecdotes and existential questions. Running for just over 30 minutes, the record moves quickly through its contrasting ideas and sounds.
At the centre of Scizzorman is drummer and vocalist Terry J Vinci, whose unconventional lyrics sit alongside Cody Robson’s bass and Stewart Herbertson’s guitar and synthesizer work. Their different vocal parts add to an album that deliberately avoids settling into one particular genre.
Across its seven tracks, heavy psychedelia gives way to glam pop, stoner rock, swamp blues, trip-hop-influenced ambience and retro funk. The shifts are considerable, but the album maintains a sense of cohesion, bringing its various influences together within a relatively compact running time. The mix was shaped by experienced sound engineer Adrian Vinci.
Scizzorman cite an eclectic range of influences, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Zappa, Arctic Monkeys, Talking Heads, David Bowie, The Beatles, The Dandy Warhols and Jimi Hendrix. Those references provide some context for the band’s broad musical palette, while HOW TO GET YOUR LIFE RIGHT WITH WHAT’S LEFT takes those influences in its own direction.
Lyrically, the album looks for meaning against an increasingly dystopian backdrop, encouraging listeners to question familiar assumptions and consider what might remain when established ideas are stripped away.
With its compact length and deliberately unpredictable approach, HOW TO GET YOUR LIFE RIGHT WITH WHAT’S LEFT marks Scizzorman’s return with a record that moves freely between styles while keeping its focus on curiosity, observation and the search for new perspectives.
