Music: Jake Exavier – Lyrics That Catch and Keep People

Jake Exavier, a singer-songwriter from Zachary Louisiana blends a nostalgic old school vibe with a contemporary edge. He tells Entertainment Now about his latest release Is It Real.

How did your musical project/band first start? Is there a story to tell about it?

Your Next Favourite Artist Is Probably Playing The Great Escape

I began singing and writing songs as a kid, and never lost sight of wanting to be an artist. I started recording music with my mentor, Rochad Holiday from 90s R&B group “Somethin’ for the People” in 2015, and I recently relocated to Los Angeles to be more involved in the music scene and really make a name for myself.

What was your first gig?

When I was 15, I won 1st place twice at The Apollo Theater in New York City, but as an artist, I performed at The House of Blues in New Orleans, back home in Louisiana. The House of Blues has such an intimate feeling between the artist and the crowd.

How have your music/live performances been received by fans?

I’ve always felt a lot of love coming from the crowd and from people who have watched me perform. I definitely try to tap into the soul and emotions while still putting on a show that’s captivating and pleasing to see.

What three words best describe your musical style and why?

Captivating, relatable, and intentional. I do my best to put together lyrics that catch and keep people. I want people to be able to feel and relate to the situation I’m singing about. I make love songs and I’m sure almost every situation I’m singing about, we’ve all been there.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

My biggest influences are Chris Brown, Usher, and Stevie Wonder.

Tell us about your new release.

“Is it Real?” came to me almost instantaneously. Before heading to a studio session that day, my producer “B-Shipe” played the track for me. I immediately started writing. It feels good as soon as the beat starts from the first second. I’m really proud of it.

What inspires your lyrics?

Life and love. I find new experiences to write about everyday. Certain times throughout the day I find myself making mental notes of certain situations I want to write about.

How do you hope listeners will feel after hearing your music?

I hope they’ll take a few moments to dig a little deeper into my music! I promise there is a lot to offer and even more to come soon.

What are you/your band working on next?

I’m always working on new music! There’s definitely more great music coming very soon.
