Songwriter Mickelson called his tenth album If You Can’t Be Right Be Loud as a reflection of the troubling political landscape of his native US. He says ” “I wrote the song Amplify two years ago about the polarizing division in the U.S. At the time, I could never have imagined we’d still be here, with Trump re-emerging as a political force. It’s impossible not to comment on the times we’re living through.”

Mickelson began his music career in the 1990s at venues like CBGBs and has played alongside Nick Lowe, Dave Van Ronk and Ash. His style has been described as American folk with a punk edge.

How did your musical project first start? Is there a story to tell about it?

Signed my first record deal in 1982 so there have been many bands and projects and lots of stories. Martin Scorsese is working on my documentary.

What was your first gig?

Playing in a hospital for terminally ill people in Massachusetts when I was 11 years old. I got $10.

How have your music/live performances been received by fans?

With amazement of course.

What three words best describe your musical style and why?

Eclectic, honest, sticky.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Beatles, Radiohead, Dolly Parton

Tell us about your new release.

It’s my tenth full-length and my best.

What inspires your lyrics

When I get tired of the songs I’m currently performing I write new ones as needed.

How do you hope listeners will feel after hearing your music?

Confused, elated and with a craving for sushi.

Do you have any upcoming tour dates?

Starting an 11 date tour in the UK on Feb. 21

What are you/your band working on next?

Rehearsals for the tour, then Australia.
