Dundee’s Copper Lungs released their new album Broken Beautiful on May 16, and they’re sounding more authentic than ever! Entertainment Now caught up with frontman Darren Lindsay for a chat.
You returned to the music scene last year. In the process of reinventing Copper Lungs, was there a specific moment when you felt you were truly stepping into your most authentic sound?
Honestly, we wrote so many half-songs just to explore where we wanted to take our sound. It wasn’t a single moment, but more of a journey, a process where things gradually fell into place. Eventually, it felt like we found the sound that matched what we wanted to write about, while still staying true to the essence of what Copper Lungs was before.
We had a pretty clear vision for the songwriting; we wanted it to be raw, vulnerable, and more mature. Every track on the album reflects that, and we’re genuinely proud of what we created.
Your new song Brushed In Gold explores the emotional struggles of balancing personal and professional life, especially as an indie musician. How do you stay motivated during tough times, and how does that influence your songwriting?
Sometimes life just feels like a bit much, and it’s tempting to switch off and coast. But we really wanted to lean into those moments instead of avoiding them.
Writing this album felt natural because it became a creative outlet to process what we’ve lived through, almost like therapy. That made staying motivated easier than ever. We weren’t forcing anything; we were just being honest.
How does your album Broken Beautiful reflect the band’s overall evolution in terms of sound and lyrics?
Broken Beautiful is the most personal project we’ve ever done. Sonically, it’s more textured and layered. We’ve experimented more, but always with purpose. Lyrically, it’s raw. The themes show where we are now in life, not just as musicians, but as people. It’s darker in places, but also hopeful. It feels like a full-circle moment for us.
If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be, and what kind of track would you create together?
We would loved to have worked with Prince. His emotional depth and vocal style were unreal. We imagine creating a stripped-back, haunting ballad that builds into something epic with layered harmonies, reverb-soaked guitars, and that emotional punch that breaks your heart and puts it back together in the same breath.
What’s one thing that no one would expect about Copper Lungs, either as a band or as individuals outside of music?
We’re just a bunch of normal guys who love music. We bring huge energy to the stage, but off stage, you’ll probably find us watching Star Wars, goofing around, and winding each other up. We’re also a pretty creative bunch outside of music, between us we’ve got a teacher, a music therapist, and two barbers in the band.
With the band gaining more attention and a growing fanbase, how do you envision Copper Lungs evolving musically and in terms of live performances over the next few years?
We want to keep growing without losing the intimacy and heart that our fans connect with. Musically, we’re not afraid to push boundaries, but it’ll always come from a real place. As for live shows, we’re aiming for bigger, more immersive, more energetic performances. We want every show to feel like a shared experience, not just a gig.
We want to be that band that feels too big for the stage we’re on and hopefully, we can keep living up to that. When it comes to new music, we just want each release to tell powerful stories and evolve naturally with wherever the writing takes us.
