Public follows the story of four strangers who get locked in a gender neutral public toilet, unlike most musicals this show is done in real time as they must wait together for an hour for the maintenance guy to break them out. An hour of musical genius and dynamic singers all displaying a fantastic vocal ability and range.
Being in real time really helps to engage the audience as there is no switching back and forth to different plotlines and storylines, we are sitting with the four people experiencing their emotions with them. One of the only shows I’ve ever seen that’s been able to accurately represent Gen Z on stage without it being cringe.
The technique and vocal quality of all the actors is incredible and such a feat to still be performing at that level in the last week of the Fringe. Some extremely difficult notes are hit with ease by all the actors on stage and the harmonies blend beautifully. The songs are all gorgeously written and a joy to both watch and listen to, something about this show and the hype surrounding it makes me think there will be big things for it. I personally am hoping for a cast recording, so I can listen to those vocals on repeat, the songs are already stuck in my head.
Not only a funny, well written show to watch, it also carries many important messages. It teaches about acceptance, standing up for yourself, feeling your power, learning to listen to other people’s stories to understand them and not judge someone on a first glance alongside many more, the list could go on and on. Although brilliant comedically, it’s also emotional and strikes a chord on the heart strings many times throughout.
This show was genuinely such a joy to watch and it had me fully immersed till the last second. I feel so grateful to have been able to see this show before it inevitably becomes a smash hit globally.
