It’s safe to say you’ve probably heard Kina’s ‘Get You The Moon’ since its release back in 2018. The viral sensation of a single has been pretty much everywhere in the past few years, with TikTok trends, Instagram reels, and viral challenges being sparked by the song’s uniquely melancholic and gentle soundscape.
But, have you met the man behind the track?
Well, you should. At just twenty-four years old, Kina has just become the first Italian artist to ever reach one billion streams with an original song. Yes, ever. Having self-released the track on Soundcloud, Kina’s journey from self-releasing in a provincial town of Naples to international recognition is a testament to his unique brand of lo-fi, bedroom pop.
The poignant lyricism and stripped back soundscape of ‘Get You The Moon’ feels like a glimpse into the deepest parts of a person’s psyche. And it clearly resonated with a wide audience, perhaps one unaware of the subtle power of lo-fi. Featured on the track is writer and vocalist Snøw, who lends his tender and intimate vocals to the stripped back soundscape. These two lo-fi titans made a masterclass in the immersive nature of a quality lo-fi track. Throughout the song, you feel as though you are swimming through the atmosphere Kina has created. Snøw’s vocals are a grounding force in the song, as the bass and synths flow in and out. Having met online, it makes sense that is where their collaboration found its fame.
As it swept through social media, major record labels (naturally) caught on as Kina’s special flavour of soulful lo-fi brought to the forefront a whole new sound. Before Kina, it was pretty much unheard of to see a lo-fi producer in the mainstream charts. Yet, there he was, sitting at number two on Billboard’s Top TV Songs Chart, and occupying the Spotify Global Daily Charts for an impressive 450 days. From being self-released on Soundcloud to making streaming history, Kina’s journey is proof of the power of social media once it finds a hidden gem such as this one.
