The Great Escape day 1 Reviews

Her Skin – Patterns

Spellbinding sublime Italian songstress Sara Ammendolia beautiful vocals sit perfectly in between these gorgeous folky pop  songs.  The recent single ‘Confident’ is catchy and heartfelt about overcoming certain situations in life.  The new single Heavy Hearted is a break up song even so it’s a jaunty little number.  Great tunes! She’s performing again on Saturday at 8.30pm at the Unitarian Church go see. 5 stars

Grace Cummings – Komedia Basement

Australian solo artist making her U.K. debut at this show. Her voice is deep seasoned and strong with a unique undertone of gravel akin to Patti Smith. There is also a Chrissie Hynde presence about her.   An amazing find, as this artist is also paving her own way.  5 stars

Alex The Astronaut – is one of my favourite artists from Australia. This quirky songwriter hasnt had the best luck today hounded with tech issues Octopus started twice and I don’t think she quite recovers regardless normally on fine form someone you should take a punt on 3  stars.

Youth Sector – The Paganelli Ballroom

Intro was ABBA setting the tone for what was to be an amazing set from these local lads.  Style, but not over substance. The front man is a star. Reminiscent of Devo and Talking Heads.  Not sure if another act at the festival can top this 5 stars

Margo Kilter – Unitarian Church

This American Country artists beautiful voice fills this church with sad songs and heartfelt story telling lyrics. She plays acoustic guitar and is accompanied by a double bass player.  Sadly she doesn’t reinvent the wheel and I’ve heard it all before. Nothing special. 2 stars

Bloom De Wilde – The Tempest Inn

Stepping on stage to a rammed and sweaty room, Blook De Wilde quickly grabbed the attention of the crowd with her voice, a mix between bjork and paloma faith her ethereal jazzy vibe has the audience spell bound 5 stars

Medicine Cabinet – Chalk

These Scottish power poppers are a force to be reckoned with, oozing charisma they perform as if they are on a stadium stage. One to watch. 5 stars

Blair Davie – Unitarian Church

You would be forgiven for comparing Blair Davie to early Ed Sheeran. This guy is immediately likeable, stunning voice and charming story telling makes for a great set but we aren’t pushing any boundaries here. 4 stars

Eli Smart – Hope & Ruin

Sun soaked indie from Hawaii, Eli Smart is clearly a hot ticket as Hope & Ruin is packed to the rafters with people taking in the ‘aloha soul’ sound, and it sounds good to me. 5 stars
