Assembly Club Bar Will Be Venue for Ultimate Fringe Wedding

The happy couple plan their wedding in the Assembly Club Bar.

American theatre producer Marshall Cordell will marry his long term partner Trish Lyons in a ceremony in the Club Bar in George Square this evening

Marshall and Trish met in 2006 – when he was producing ‘a bunch of shows’ on the Fringe and she was working in the Assembly press office.

Cordell, who is from Chicago, says: “That was in the days when you went to the press office to collect clippings – so I kept going to the press office and I met Trish.

“A Fringe crush was born.”

The couple decided to hold a ceremony for their Fringe family on August 19 in the Assembly Club Bar in George Square.

American comic Mike McShane will conduct the ceremony, actor David Calvitto will be the best man and producer and director Guy Masterson will deliver a wedding speech.

Renowned Edinburgh harpist Sophie Askew will play music and there will be a performance from Rainee Blake, whose show Take Me As I Am, at Le Monde, celebrates the work of Joni Mitchell.

Trish, who is from Canada but lives in Mexico says: “ We went to see Rainee Blake’s show and loved it so we asked her to perform at our wedding.  She said: ‘I’d love to – and I already have tears in my eyes.’”

Performers, producers and critics will converge on the Club Bar this evening from 6pm.  Marshall Cordell says: “We’re expecting around 100 people.  After 25 years there is a lot of history.”

The couple previously held a ceremony in the United States for their families – who will also be invited to celebrate their very special Fringe wedding – via Zoom. The Club Bar will be closed to everyone except wedding guests for three hours on Monday evening.

Apart from his wedding Marshall is not producing any shows this year – but the couple have been rushing around Edinburgh seeing shows.

Trish said: “We’ve seen some great shows.  It seems to be a particularly good year for female solo performers.  We loved Weather Girl, Elf Lyons and Natalie Palamides.”
