Music: Matty co. Reflects on Love and Nostalgia in New Single ‘BACK2BASICS’

Los Angeles-based artist Matt Cohen, known by his stage name matty co., is a man of many talents and many lives. Raised in Orange County with a stint in Hawaii, Cohen’s musical journey blends childhood wonder with a deep-seated nostalgia, all influenced by his father’s creative legacy at Disney and the unwavering support of his mother. As a true Gemini, Cohen thrives in dual worlds: one as a digital marketing mastermind behind successful campaigns for artists like St. Vincent and Ghost, and the other as a magnetic artist whose charm draws listeners in effortlessly.

Now, matty co. is stepping into the spotlight with his latest release, ‘BACK2BASICS’—a groovy, romantic track about reconnecting in a relationship when life gets in the way. This new single, released as the final piece of his ALL IS GOOD HERE mini collection, was produced by Adam Castilla (The Colourist) and Brick Mansion Recordings. With smooth, velvety vocals and an infectious groove, matty co. offers a compelling blend of electronic indie pop with soulful R&B undertones—a sound that echoes the hook-driven melodies of Tom Misch and the sonic allure of Djo.

‘BACK2BASICS’ is a dynamic, layered track built on a groovy bassline that gives it a timeless, yet modern feel. The song is both catchy and captivating, avoiding clichés with its sultry rhythms and warm textures. It’s a track that feels both fresh and nostalgic, marking matty co.’s continued rise in the indie music scene. Already named a WFNM Artist to Watch 2025and featured on All New Rock & Fresh Finds, matty co. is proving to be one of the most exciting new voices in music today.

Sharing his personal connection to the song, matty co. said, “BACK2BASICS is a comforting, nostalgic song that means a lot to me. It touches on some of my favorite memories with my now-fiancé—like holding her close, tracing her back, and just letting her know that everything’s going to be okay. It’s that feeling, wrapped up in a song.”

While BACK2BASICS solidifies his signature sound, Cohen is also the bassist for the breakout LA rock band Holy Wars, proving his versatility across genres. With this new single, matty co. merges elements of rock with indie pop, creating a sound that feels like a perfectly crafted cocktail—smooth, balanced, and layered with a hint of rock-infused energy.

‘BACK2BASICS’ is streaming now.
