Q&A with Mary Hatley – The Story Behind The Poison I Choose

Memphis-based singer-songwriter Mary Hatley opens up about her journey from living room performances to the release of her debut album, The Poison I Choose. Blending blues, rock, and country influences, Hatley’s music channels raw emotion, personal reflection, and the spirit of her hometown. In this Q&A, she shares the story behind her beginnings, the inspiration that fuels her songwriting, and what’s next in her evolving musical journey.

How did your musical project/band first start? Is there a story to tell about it?

I had a neighbor who is a touring musician who listened to me play “Dog Days” with my acoustic in my living room. Right from then we started demoing the album and putting together a group of musicians to play on the record. I met Matt Qualls, my current producer, through said neighbor when we went to Easley McCain. There were a few months where nothing happened so I called Matt and we immediately picked up where we left off. We put together a new group of musicians and finished the album.

What was your first gig?

My very first gig was a local event in Memphis called Artober Fest with a lineup of local musicians, which I did as a solo show. It was a great first set because I was surrounded by supportive local artists.

How have your music/live performances been received by fans?

People come up to me saying that my performances give off a Fleetwood Mac vibe. I’ve also gotten remarks that the music is even better live than the recordings which is always a huge compliment to receive as a musician.

What three words best describe your musical style and why?

Blues, Country, and Rock. I grew up in Memphis which has a strong music history and presence. Blues and Rock are really big in Memphis and those genres seemed to bleed into my original music.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

I am heavily inspired by Fleetwood Mac, Chris Stapleton, Amy Winehouse, and Tracy Chapman. The combination of rock, country, and soul really speaks to me.

Tell us about your new release.

“The Poison I Choose” is a vulnerable collection of songs that follow my life and my journey into adulthood. It follows the grief and loss but also the hope for the future. This project really healed me and allowed me to leave behind the “old version” of me that I had been for so long and open the door for who I am today.

What inspires your lyrics?

My personal life has always inspired my music. I use songwriting as a form of therapy and it just so helps that other people relate to the vulnerability and experiences. Everything from toxic relationships to exciting nights out are told through my songs.

How do you hope listeners will feel after hearing your music?

I hope that they walk away realizing that there are other people who feel the same way they do and experienced the same things. I want everyone to feel heard and seen when they listen to my music. I’ve always aimed for it to be a therapeutic experience.

Do you have any upcoming tour dates?

No but I have a few shows that you can find on my socials.

What are you/your band working on next?

I am currently starting the recording process of the next album with Matt Qualls. I am also putting together shows for us and seeing where it takes me.
